Liv’s evening suddenly turns upside down when her sister, Aja, calls her in the middle of taking her own life.

Synopsis

Drawing subtle references to Samuel Beckett’s “Waiting For Godot”, "Råbe Under Vand" is about two siblings working through the news of their sister attempting suicide. Liv and Marcus sit down and wait for news of Aja’s whereabouts - and whether she is even alive. As questions arise within Liv as to why Aja would do this, Marcus reveals the truth about the car crash: Aja hit a person, and their mom forced them to keep it secret. Liv is shocked by the news, but not of their mother’s twisted scheme to keep it hidden from authorities. Early in the morning, Liv and Marcus finally receive news that Aja is in the hospital and well. They go to see her, where Aja reveals that she told the police everything, ultimately “sacrificing” herself and facing the consequences of her actions to defy their mother. The short film is first and foremost about family, and how traumatic events can both pick a family apart and bring them back together. The traffic accident drew the three siblings apart, since Liv was never involved with the incident and felt an increasing gap growing between her and her siblings; but when Liv and Marcus is faced with the consequences of Aja’s mental health, it brings the three of them closer to resolve the conflict and together find a way to work through the traumas they’re all going through. The story is secondarily about guilt, and who’s to blame when someone decides to take their own life. Though it might not always be, and in most cases isn’t actually anyone’s fault, our minds will always wonder what we could’ve done differently in order to save a life.
