Outline
Two estranged friends look back on what broke their relationship, reflecting whether it was a lack of empathy, an over exaggeration in an argument, or mistrust between the two.
Synopsis
Johanne and Ella seemed to be lifelong friends, but when a feeling of mistrust starts to grow between them, the whole friendship is put at risk. They meet after two years apart, to reflect on what went wrong between them. As we go back in time, we see the two girls' different points of views. We follow Johanne who is constantly emotionally leaned on by Ella, without getting much support in return. She keeps having to convince Ella not to go back to her ex-boyfriend Elias, although she has never really understood what he did to her. Johanne wants to trust her best friend, but Ella is vague and incoherent in her stories about Elias, so Johanne starts wondering if some of it could be something Ella made up for attention. When the opportunity to hear Elias' point of view comes up, she decides to secretly take it. For Ella, Joahanne is her most trusted friend. She is the person who has repeatedly been the counterbalance to the disruptive comments of Elias, and the last person she would think could have any contact with him. When she coincidentally discovers the text messages between Johanne and Elias, the suppressed memories of the manipulative relationship comes back. With her best friend not trusting her story, she alone has to convince herself that she actually was a victim to verbal abuse. Is there, two years later, room for understanding, and more importantly, forgiveness? VENN is a short film about friendship, trust, manipulative relationships, and how there are always two sides to every story.
