Synopsis
Olivia Mangold is a 20-year-old student, who recently partied with her closest friend Emma. The film starts off with a video recorded from Olivia’s phone. They are at the party, struggling to put on their make-up due to their intoxicated state. Learning that the recording was accidental, they decide to keep the video as a memory because: “I’ll probably forget it in the morning.” Immediately, we are introduced to a completely different scenario taking place a while after the video, serving as a contrast to what we just witnessed. Olivia is sitting at the local student cafe, their usual hangout, but we see a crumbled missing poster with a picture of Emma, indicating that there has been a search for Emma for quite some time. Throughout the film, we see that Olivia is trying to get in contact with Emma by calling and texting her. With no success, she finds comfort in doing it, as she gets to hear the voice of Emma by listening to her voice-mail. But right as her feeling of loss peaks, she receives a call from Emma’s number, making her hopeful. As she suspects that the caller, whether it’s Emma or her kidnapper/killer, is in the same room as her, she is confronted by a silhouette that we learn is Emma. While Olivia starts out happy and relieved by the presence of her best friend, she gets confused when Emma speaks in riddles by repeating lines from the video in the beginning. It is eventually revealed to be Olivia’s subconsciousness confronting her, trying to make her face the fact that Emma is gone and convince her to move on from the loss. Just as it seems that Olivia has found peace, we see her hanging Emma's missing person poster back up on the wall, seeming to be worse than initially. No matter what, her friend will always be in her memories and she will never accept the fact that she’s no longer present.
