Synopsis

A young woman Malin has always dreamt of becoming a professional ballerina. A dream close to becoming true as she’s offered an audition to be a solo dancer at a Swiss ballet academy; an opportunity that could secure her career as a ballerina. But that is only if Malin can stay focused on ballet and not indulge in the pleasures of the personal desires a young woman her age might have. A young man Albert has been thrown out of his uncles farm and is looking for a place to sleep for the night. He comes by the house of Malin further down the road, who mistakes him for a burglar and threatens to call the police. He explains that he used to know Malin and her parents and out of sympathy she lets him into the house. While Albert is taking a shower, Malin finds her socks and ballet shoes soaked with blood and her feet frightfully bruised from her demanding dance practice. After a stiff first meeting, Malin opens up to Albert and tells him about her dream of getting on one of the big ships passing through the inlet by her house. Being in a bedroom alone with a man for the first time, Malin lets go of her fear and ends up having sex with Albert. Malin wakes up the next morning, ashamed of her actions of the previous night and seeks down to the water. Albert finds her on the shore and offers her a cigarette, which she declines. Albert tells her about his dream of becoming a journalist and his dissatisfaction with the narrow reality portrayed by the media. He opens Malin’s curiosity about what life has to offer besides ballet and who she would be without it. Albert leaves Malin to go to the city and make a life for himself. Watching him walk down the long driveway Malin is left back with the option of continuing the dream she’s worked her life on or to follow her new found instincts towards a path of freedom.
