Synopsis
Kim and Matti have been together for three years. The world doesn’t understand their love, but they find freedom and safety in each other. They are very much in love. We first meet Matti and Kim in Matti’s apartment. We establish their relationship. They leave when Matti has to pick up his friend, Danny. He drops Kim off at home on his way. At night Kim is woken up by Matti in her bedroom. He snuck in through the cellar just to be with her, he claims. Matti seems out of it and not himself. Kim is suspicious but allows him to stay. The day after, Kim asks about Matti’s car, which is not parked in its regular spot. He claims he just felt like walking. Kim doesn’t believe this and tries to push for the truth, but Matti snaps and yells. Kim leaves both him and the argument to go pick up a package. While biking Kim passes the scene of a traffic accident on the street where Matti was supposed to pick up Danny the night before. A forensic team is working at the scene. Next to the scene is a small memorial with candles and flowers. There’s a framed picture, showing a young teenage girl. Kim calls Danny and finds out Matti never picked him up. She connects the dots and rushes home to confront Matti. At home Kim confronts him about his whereabouts the night before. She reveals that she has talked to Danny and knows the truth. Matti tries to leave, but Kim stops him and demands to know where the car is. Matti ends up admitting that he hid the car in the forest, thereby admitting that he was involved in the accident. Kim demands that he turns himself in, since the girl is dead. Matti is shocked to learn that the girl has died and leaves in a state of shock. He is met by two police officers when opening the front door, and they take him with them for questioning. Kim goes to visit him after the police are done interrogating him. Matti is broken and apathetic. The police have found the car, but Matti still claims his innocence. Kim again begs him to turn himself in, but he refuses. She sees that he is deeply distressed and decides to leave him alone. On her way out Matti says he loves her and she says it back. The morning after, Kim is woken by her phone ringing. It is Matti’s mother. She informs Kim that Matti has taken his own life the night before. Weeks later we see Kim visiting the graveyard, first the grave of the girl that Matti killed and then Matti ́s grave where she goes through a range of emotions. The film ends with Kim placing a lit joint on Matti’s headstone as a last gift. The smoke she inhaled from lighting it, she exhales while looking into the camera.
